Arielle Nissenblatt wants to help you to find your new favorite podcast! After discovering podcasts for the first time in 2014, she was hooked. Today, she hosts Feedback with Earbudsand the Trailer Park Podcast, works as a community marketing manager at Descript and a consultant at Tink Media, and more. She is also the founder of Earbuds Podcast Collective, co-founder of Podcast Taxonomy, and a passionate advocate for growing the podcast industry!

During this conversation, Arielle shares the passion for all things audio that led her to create a newsletter that evolved into one of the podcasts she hosts today. Arielle is a thought leader in the podcasting space and generously shares her hard-earned wisdom about monetization strategies and sponsorship, building credibility, and truly podcasting from your purpose.

Takeaways From This Episode:

Arielle didn’t plan to start a podcast. Her journey began with a newsletter, talking about all things audio and podcasts. What began as an experiment to bring a more hands-on perspective to her written content has blossomed into an integral part of her life and business today. Changing and evolving is part of the journey.

The idea of having a podcast can be really exciting. But what is the long-term plan? Arielle recommends outlining your first season before diving in. Planning in advance is a key strategy to set you up for long-term success.

If you have a podcast, you should have three reasons beyond dollars and downloads. These can and will evolve over time. Reassess every six months and determine the value you are deriving from it.

Feedback is an opportunity for growth. You simply can’t afford to be stuck in your ways as a podcaster! The structure and content of your podcast should change and improve as you gain experience and insight. You can always stop, reassess, and streamline your processes.

You should definitely have a trailer for your podcast. The podcast listening apps even have a space dedicated to them. You also get to market your show before you roll out a marketing strategy. It takes a lot less time to make a trailer than a regular season episode.

There are plenty of innovative ways to generate income from your podcast. Arielle’s podcast is linked to a newsletter and so is the advertising. Sponsorship is also an awesome strategy! Think beyond dollars to legitimacy and the power of association.

Quotes:

“A lot of people get excited about the idea of having a podcast, and not enough people stop to think: what is the longevity plan of this podcast?” — @arithisandthat [0:10:01]

“I’ve learned through audio that I need to be passionate about something in order to do a good job.” — @arithisandthat [0:31:48]

“You have to work for every single listener.” — @arithisandthat [0:34:41]

“I want more people to be exposed to a podcast that might be their next favorite podcast and that might help them grow the industry, which will help more creators get paid.” — @arithisandthat [0:35:30]

Quotes:

“[The podcast] is a wonderful opportunity to create accessible information.” — Dr. Shainna Ali [0:05:00]

“I’m an educator at the end of the day — I’ve been really tethered to the goal of wanting to make sure that the listener learns something that they may not have access to or may not even be learning in their counseling office even if they are going in for therapy.” — Dr. Shainna Ali [0:14:27]

“I know that if I am going to have someone on, it’s going to be someone that’s well-vetted, someone that I trust. That is a non-negotiable for me.” — Dr. Shainna Ali [0:21:57]

Longer Quotes:

“Something that I like about a podcast, [is] we never know who’s really listening — we have these fun fancy stats on the backend of things but you never know who’s willing to listen to a podcast that may be a little bit more intimidated to go into a counseling office, take a class, [or] fill in the blank.” — Dr. Shainna Ali [0:16:35]

Nathaniel Ernst is a kinesiologist and personal trainer in Calgary, Alberta. He is the owner-operator of NATEFIT Integrated Fitness and Nutrition, taking a sustainable approach to health and fitness. He also hosts the Down and Dirty Podcast, where he delves into health and fitness topics as an extension of NATEFIT’s mission.

Today’s episode explores what it means to infuse your personal passion into your business and truly integrate your podcast into your business model. Nate gives us a welcome reminder that it’s natural to have a list of fears when you first create your own podcast and that everyone has to start somewhere! We also talk about the immeasurable value of time and why it is the greatest investment you can make in your podcast, plus so much more.

Takeaways From This Episode:

Nate’s journey has been all about turning his personal passions and interests into a career, and it shows! His passion for learning and connecting with others inspired the launch of his podcast, Down and Dirty, which acts as an extension of NATEFIT today.

Beyond interviewing his guests, Nate’s goal is to have a conversation that allows listeners to learn as they get to know each person and hear their story. His primary goal is to equip his listeners with actionable tools and practical knowledge to support their health and fitness journeys.

The Down and Dirty Podcast might not be what you think of when you think of health and fitness, but that’s exactly why Nate chose the name. It’s a little provocative and sparks curiosity to inspire listeners to press play!

The biggest obstacle Nate faced when starting his podcast was getting comfortable enough to move beyond the fear of being criticized. He also had to learn how to put each guest at ease before hitting record. This is a reminder that we are not alone in those initial fears that we have when starting a podcast.

Podcasting has changed how Nate interacts with his clients; connecting with them and asking questions to truly understand their experience. He uses his podcast to expand his knowledge to better serve his clients, truly integrating it into the fabric of his business

His most non-negotiable resource is undoubtedly the time he invests in his podcast. His advice is to value your time and recognize that it is the best investment that you can make in your podcast.

Quotes:

“The primary goal [of the Down and Dirty podcast] is to equip listeners with actionable tools and knowledge. I want to share knowledge with the listeners while I learn.” — Nathaniel Ernst [0:06:25]

“I try not to make it an interview. I want people to really get to know the guests and feel a part of the conversation. That’s how I learn best. I think that’s a great way to engage the audience as well.” — Nathaniel Ernst [0:06:45]

“Something that I started to notice throughout the podcast is [that] I have this unique opportunity to have these guests on where I probably wouldn’t have had a deep conversation with them before.” — Nathaniel Ernst [0:13:46]

“[Know] that you’re not alone. It’s natural to have fears. Everyone is starting from somewhere.” — Nathaniel Ernst [0:19:15]

“My biggest piece of advice is just be you. Be authentically you.” — Nathaniel Ernst [0:25:23]

Stay tuned for a delightful episode whose stocking is filled to the brim with festive joy!

Takeaways From This Episode:

To engage with your audience during the holidays, consider decorating your podcasting space and sharing holiday-related content. This could involve discussing your personal rituals, exploring stress-relief tips for the holidays, or delving into the history of holiday traditions. You can also create bonus episodes outside of your regular schedule, focusing on festive topics like favorite holiday movies, allowing you to stay connected with your audience in a fun and seasonal way.

For podcasters, maintaining momentum can be a key ally in your podcasting experience. But making time to switch off and take a break is also important. Luckily, there are some great strategies you can use to take time off without losing that hard-earned momentum, like recording in advance, doing batch recordings, and making sure all your social posts are ready to go. And don’t forget to communicate with your audience! They’ll want to know if you’re taking time off or have special holiday episodes coming up. The holidays are a great time to explore themed podcasts celebrating the festive season. Carli and Jennay share some of their favorites, including ‘Tis The Grinch Holiday Talk Show hosted by the green monster himself. This one isn’t just for the kids, parents will love the dry humor this curmudgeonly creature is known for! And if you’re feeling stressed, The Calm Christmas podcast with Beth Kempton is another wonderful recommendation to help you deal with the added anxiety that often accompanies this time of year.

For Carli, pivoting from being a full-time mom and getting back into her demanding role at We Edit Podcasts has been a joy, but the learning curve has been crazy on all fronts. While there are goals she had hoped to achieve by the end of the year, the amount she and her team have managed to accomplish in such a short time has been phenomenal. As we reflect and look towards the new year, it’s important to take stock of not only your wins, but also your misses, and embrace what you can learn from that.

When you host a podcast, you get to chat with some phenomenal guests, which has been one of the most exciting aspects of launching Business Beyond The Mic. From adopting a beginner’s mindset in podcasting to streamlining the process, Carli shares the biggest lessons she’s learned from guests this past year — and why she can’t wait for all the fascinating guests she gets to learn from once January rolls around!

If there’s one piece of advice that Jennay has for listeners as we go into the new year, it’s this: be kind to yourself. While it may sound cliché, it’s essential not to be too hard on yourself. Instead of measuring success solely by metrics or numbers, reflect on the areas where you’ve experienced personal growth throughout the year. When you look at all these different areas, you’ll realize you achieved a lot more than you think you did!

Quotes:

“There’s a lot of options out there to keep your momentum going without actually having to put in the work during the holidays.” — Carli van Heerden [0:11:24]

“We’re looking forward to the new year, but I think it’s so important to reflect and take stock of where you are. Look at your wins, maybe the misses and see what you can learn from that.” — Jennay Horn [0:20:05]

“My word this year has been reinventing — and it’s not to change who you are. It’s to continuously be working on yourself day by day, so that you are a better version of yourself than you were yesterday.” — Carli van Heerden [0:24:25]

“Look back at the year. You don’t have to measure success by your metrics. You don’t have to measure success by numbers. Look at the places that you’ve grown.” — Jennay Horn [0:31:12]

“Be kind to yourself in terms of what you have achieved. You really have achieved a lot if you look back and spread the glance back over so many different areas.” — Jennay Horn [0:31:32]

“Your time is valuable. Find ways to streamline it, so that you can love what you do, continue to love what you do, and enjoy spending time with those around you. Find those systems and those habits that really save you time and maximize your output.” — Jennay Horn [0:31:43]

“Maximize the output from less input, so that you always pour from a full cup.” — Jennay Horn [0:32:02]

Quotes:

“My brand is all about helping others grow and supporting them in that growth. That’s why I started a podcast called Too Long; Don’t Listen, which aims to help support and empower students and young professionals to navigate their career decisions.” — @senda_ba [0:03:52]

“The reason I picked podcasts [as my platform of choice] was essentially how easy it is to consume the content that’s available to you — You can listen to podcasts anywhere, anytime.” — @senda_ba [0:04:51]

“Not only [are podcasts] easy to consume, but [they’re] also becoming more and more accessible and famous. We’re seeing it become more of a trend. I work in marketing and I see lots of brands using podcasting as a way to grow their audience or promote services and products.” — @senda_ba [0:05:19]

“Being able to record those conversations and have them available to anyone, anytime is a great way to inspire people at scale.” — @senda_ba [0:05:40]

“Always leverage your network [to find guests]. That’s the number one rule.” — @senda_ba [0:14:46]

“From a marketing perspective, [I’m] focusing on building [quality relationships] versus thinking of the number of listeners and the quantity of followers when they’re not really engaging. It loses its impact on your podcast and on your content.” — @senda_ba [0:17:32]

Podcasting can be an incredible community-building platform. Joining us today on Business Beyond the Mic is a man who is no stranger to the power of a podcast: Tim Traux. Tim is the host of The Nerd Room and the new podcast the Podcast Experience, as well as the owner of the incredible podcast conferencing company known as PodSummit. We’re thrilled to welcome him to discuss his podcasting journey and discover what he has learned along the way!

In our conversation, Tim opens up about how he turned his passion into a podcast, shares his podcasting ‘why’, and reminds us of the importance of innovation and experimentation. We also delve into the two different styles of podcasting that Tim has adopted and find out how he has created incredible, lasting friendships through his platforms. Tuning in, you’ll even learn how to measure your podcast success by more than just statistics!

Takeaways From This Episode:

Tim tells us about how his passion for pop culture and community-building inspired him to start The Nerd Room. He also introduces us to his new business, the PodSummit, which centers around podcast conferences and community in Canada specifically and has also led to the creation of his new podcast, the Podcast Experience.

Find out how Tim has evolved as a podcaster, the importance of being experimental with your podcasts, and how to apply your experience from your first podcast to a new one. Tim also tells us how he’s learned how to interview guests in a natural way and become a master podcast interviewer.

Pushing yourself out of the comfort zone of the “talking head’” style of podcasting can make you a better podcaster. Ask Tim, who has learned to adopt more than one podcasting style. He also tells us how ‘tugging on the thread’ can open your podcast up to be far more interesting.

The Nerd Room has created an incredible community of people, some of whom Tim even considers his best friends. The Nerd Room community was Tim’s anchor through the pandemic and he explains how it has completely changed his life.

Focusing on the metrics of your podcast and trying to measure your success in that way can be dangerous for your self-esteem (and not necessarily accurate). Instead, Tim chooses to place his focus on his ‘why’ and on the impact he makes on the community he is building.

Podcasting has increased Tim’s overall confidence in his life and business. He lets us in on his favorite remote recording platforms and how his failure to innovate quickly affected his podcast negatively. He also tells us his dreams for PodSummit and how they would scale if money were no object.

Quotes:

“The idea of The Nerd Room was always about community building. It was finding a place where we could express ourselves and find like-minded individuals to share in a passion.” — @thenerdrm [0:05:50]

“You have to be able to weave your way through three different opinions and also progress the podcast itself and what you’re talking about from topic to topic.” — @thenerdrm [0:14:14]

“Don’t be afraid to tug on that thread. There’s this idea that you pull on the thread and the sweater comes undone. That’s what you are trying to do as a host. You pull, pull, pull until it opens up, and then you got something completely different.” — @thenerdrm [0:18:02]

“I have been able to form very real relationships with people through the podcast. We’ve been able to experience and support each other through things like the pandemic.” — @thenerdrm [0:19:16]
